Northern Metal Cats Sprint into Action

HACS-01LG-MP METAL CAT

Red Cat Cheetah

Shaian’s main claim to fame is the Cheetah, an insanely nimble but incredibly expensive recon gear that is so capable that it outshines every opponent in its class. This however led to a problem, a gear that is expensive to make and maintain and serves mainly as a dedicated EW platform is not always in high demand. Simple economics dictated that in order to survive Shaian would need something closer to the baseline.

The Gold Mamba Has All the Bling

T-XM1500/2 GOLD MAMBA

The design team has worked simultaneously on a second prototype for the Rock Mamba, following a slightly unusual philosophy. Whereas most companies create a machine, see what does not work with it, then work their way up to a cost-efficient solution, the engineers on this project worked with a second machine on the side on which they would install the most expensive system to solve any problems the first machine would have. Technicians would then tweak it and whittle it down to make the system as inexpensive as possible, removing parts which, in practice, would not really affect the system’s performance in this particular case, and so on. As a result, the budget of the entire project has reached unheard-of levels, making the Gold Mamba the most expensive Gear since the original J├Ąger prototype, hence the name.

Heavy Gear RPG: Player Narrative Control

Heavy Gear Fourth Edition aims for a combination of open ended rules with well defined game effects. Anything the player imagines can be a Skill, Trait, or equipment and those rules get applied in the same simple ways. Heavy Gear 4e When and how they get applied though is up to a process called Lobbying.

The Player Lobby

Players are expected to ask to use Traits or Skills in different situations. Sometimes, this will mean finding a way to argue why their trait should help them – or hinder them. Remember that you only get XP when you take a challenge on a roll. This process is meant to be collaborative and two-way. Just as a player might argue their Advantage might uniquely help them in a situation, the Director can argue an Adversity might hurt them unexpectedly as well. Of course, you can define a Skill or Trait very narrowly to avoid the need to discuss, which can be helpful for mission critical skills.

Team Dynamics and Session Flow in Heavy Gear RPG

Today we want to talk about some of the basics that guide what a session of Heavy Gear looks and plays like. Before getting into any of that though, we should talk about optional rules. Heavy Gear Fourth Edition contains some rules which are tagged optional. By default these are on but a Director might choose to play without them. These rules add more complexity to the game and cover area’s otherwise entirely left to Director discretion. They can be thought of like mods to a video game – something that is rarely essential but provides a richer experience. The game functions fine without any of them, and may be a more streamlined experience, but we recommend using them. Some examples of optional rules are the wealth system, burden (how much players can carry), and Archetypes (which act like character classes in other systems.)

Miranda Petite Joins The Black Talons

Miranda and Julius

Miranda Petite first made a name for herself as a child prodigy in gymnastics. At a very young age she was selected for participation in olympic level competition for her native league the Humanist Alliance. As an adult she joined the MILICIA and soon became a member of the SIU special forces. Her highly competitive nature also led her to serve a rotation as a duelist for her home regiment. During the Interpolar War, Miranda was a member of KADA and thus missed out on most of the fighting. She was soon recruited into the Black Talon organization after its founding. Her natural skills, independent mindset, and general lack of interest in her homeland made her a perfect candidate. She even took her Cobra, Julius, with her and had Julius updated to Dark Cobra specs. Her initial tour saw her mostly serving on Terra Nova, clearing out CEF forces in hiding. During the events of Operation Icarus she earned multiple commendations for bravery and valor but was specifically called out for her leadership of her commanding officer was killed. Despite her position as a team leader, she took control of a larger Talon operation and led it with skill and tactical acumen. Her actions earned her a promotion and saw her tapped to lead Talon forces on Caprice. This assignment would not come to pass however as the CEF invasion started before she could leave, and she has remained on Terra Nova for the foreseeable future.

Edward Scott, Sergeant Major

Astute students of the events surrounding the Polar War will recognize the name Edward Scott. Scott served as the regimental duelist for the 67th “Harvest Wind” Gear regiment of the Northern Guard during the Polar War. The most notable actions he participated in surrounded the naval duel between the CNCS’s Vigilance and the AST’s Draco which resulted in the surrender of the latter after a duel between Scott and the traitorous Jennifer Brockton. Despite his actions Scott became a pariah to those outside his regiment. Events during the battle with the Draco saw Scott engage his regimental commander in an honor duel and kill him which forever stained his reputation. After the Polar War Scott would remain with the Northern Guard where he would serve as an instructor for young gear pilots. With the looming threat of a new invasion, Scott was recalled to the 67th for active duty where he quickly regained his position as Duelist. He would participate in the devastating Battle of Sorrento which would exhaust the Northern Guard as an offensive military force. While sifting through regimental records during the Sorrento operations, Scott learned of a secret that had been kept from him surrounding the events of Vigilance - Draco battle relating to the the Southern operative using the name Jennifer Brockton. When recovery crews salvaged the wreck of his opponent’s machine after the battle there were no remains in the cockpit.

The Agamemnon Thunders into Battle

PA-AX01 AGAMEMNON

If war were to break out between the North and the South, repercussions upon the Badlands would be unavoidable. Seeing the tensions build between the polar powers, the probability of conflict became a forgone conclusion. In preparation, Peace River and Paxton Arms began vehicle research and development in earnest.

L. Derek Evans, regarded by many to be a Gear design prodigy, was assigned to lead the Agamemnon team. Within three seasons, the first of the Agamemnon prototypes had been built. The armor necessary to meet the design’s required specifications was too heavy, and so Jean Robertson developed a special composite material for the design which proved lighter and more resilient than the armor used on the other Elite designs. Unfortunately the cost and labor involved in manufacturing the new composite prevent the replacement of the armor on the other designs with the Robertson composite until a more efficient manufacturing process is devised.
