The Lion Roars

Lion Mountaineering Gear

The Lion was rolled after the Interpolar War as a heavy strike gear. The overall design is larger than most gears of its class while also retaining a higher degree of dexterity than models such as the Grizzly. The purpose of this design is to offer an intermediary assault unit to Northern armies. The design team mounted a variety of handheld weapons, backed up by long range artillery rockets. The gear was provided with climbing equipment as well to ensure good operational mobility in the northern hemisphere. The Lion was praised by commanders everywhere for its engineered feats not previously available. But many pilots viewed it as being less versatile. Detractors pointed to its lower overall speed and performance compared to a Jaguar while simultaneously having a more limited weapon suite compared to fire support gears.Ultimately, commanders everywhere were impressed enough to push for more Lions and the production skyrocketed. In the turbulent second CEF invasion of Terra Nova, the Lion proved the northern commanders right. Its unique weapon loadout combined with its advanced integrated targeting computer demonstrated success as they went toe to toe with CEF frames. Its ability to traverse mountains and leverage its heavy fire on the enemy has proven invaluable on the UMF frontlines around Lyonesse. The pilots who’ve lived to tell their story explain a new respect for the beast.Northco has taken notice and even expanded the line, adding more weapon packages to its catalog. Commanders in the North have been begging for a command unit and they now come with Thunder and SECCOM upgrades similar to the Jaguar.

The Peace River Myrmidon

Peace River Myrmidon

PA-MX01 Myrmidon

With the success of the initial prototypes of the Warrior Elite came additional funding, resources and an extended research and development profile. The extended profile called for the research and development of four additional Gear designs to fill a wide range of mission requirements. The first of these, meant to fill the role of heavy assault Gear, was given the name Myrmidon.

Unit of Renown - The Wolf and Falcon Brigades

One of the opening acts of the War for Terra Nova was a coup in Port Arthur. CEF loyalists turned on their fellows and seized control of the city-state. Colonel Arthur made it out alive but many of his trusted allies were executed by the CEF loyalists. Much of the GREL population was put to work as effectively slave labor, turning Port Arthur back into the military beachhead it was intended to be. As Colonel Arthur rallied his followers to retake the city, inside the inhabitants were in near open rebellion. Led by Colonel Proust, the GREL portions of the population resisted CEF occupation hard and would later prove instrumental in the retaking of the city. NuCoal and allied forces were organized into two “brigades” codenamed Wolf and Falcon. Wolf consisted of much of Arthur’s tank and infantry forces while Falcon was predominantly gears. These two forces alternated playing hammer and anvil as they destroyed CEF units sent to contest them. Eventually they made it to Port Arthur and the resistance forces helped force the CEF to abandon the city’s defenses. Proust himself fled, taking a huge amount of equipment, supplies and new recruits with him just as Colonel Arthurs forces breached the gates.

Anacondas and Wolfs and Nightingales, Oh My!

Hey, all Prof here again.

Today I want to talk about a recent release on the community site. The F-55 (previously known as the Type-55) and the F-305 frames came out last week and I saw a few questions I wanted to take some time and answer. First off, a quick note on the name of the -55. The original crop of CEF frames all had Type-XXX as their names which was cool but was later changed to F-XXX. Narratively this is just a redesignation of the frames and not so much a retcon or a new unit.

The Back Catalogue and You

/post/the-back-catalogue-and-you/featured.jpg
Hey everyone, Prof here and I want to talk about the back catalogue.

Heavy Gear came out in the mid-1990s and since then has accumulated a vast library of content. That content spans 3 (soon to be 4) RPG editions and multiple iterations of the tabletop wargame. The core 4th edition book provides a brief overview of the history, world and major players of the universe but ultimately, we only have so many pages. With that in mind I wanted to compile a list of recommendations for previous books that are rich with useful content.

The Silverscale Hears Everything

OACS-03M/COM ELINT SILVERSCALE

Elint Silverscale

The Basilisk proved its worth to the armies of the South by becoming the basis for a variety of technically advanced variants which belie the chassis’ humble beginnings. The rugged and reliable frame came to house valuable electronics carried into the battlefield for various specialized roles. The Elint Silverscale — part of the Silverscale family of Basilisk variants — was just one such model, a very effective electronic intelligence platform. The Gear was designed to travel quickly over contested ground and monitor enemy frequencies, jamming them if need be, but, more importantly, gathering valuable tactical information from intra- and inter-unit communications. The Elint was heavily modified for its task, having many of its composite steel alloy armor plates replaced by lighter ballistic cloth in order to reduce overall weight and increase speed. In addition to the target designator/sensor mast used by the Silverscale, the Elint was also equipped with secondary sensor pods on each shoulder and with a large listening dish. Together this package consisted of some of the most sophisticated electronic signal gathering equipment on the battlefield at that time. Offensive firepower was very limited, however, with the Elint shedding its Vogel rocket pod and PR-25 autocannon. A simple DP76 20 mm pack gun was provided for defensive purposes. All in all, the Gear was not designed for combat, with few weapons, light armor and very vulnerable systems.
