NLAF INFANTRY
The Prophet demands that you view this article on the equipment and doctrine of the Northern Lights Armed Forces.
Faction: NLAF
Stat Block
Primary Skills: Tactics (NLAF), Awareness (Battlefield), Institutions (Revisionist Church), Institutions (NLAF), Gunnery (Small Arms), Gunnery (Heavy Weapons), Survival (Emergency Survival)
Secondary Skills: Athletics (Pack Training), Mechanics (Demolition), Medicine (First Aid), Electronic Warfare (Forward Observation), Pilot (Ground Vehicle), Survival (Navigation), Melee (Close Assault)
Squad Organization:
NLAF squads are similar in organization to NorGuard ones, except that each Fire Team is made of 4 soldiers instead of 5, allowing a single Weapons Team to be organically integrated into a squad of 10.
Uniform:
The NLAF dress uniform is a brown jacket with a white shirt and gray pants. Uniquely among the Northern militaries, the dress uniform has no leggings or gloves. A brown peaked cap is worn outdoors.
Main Weapon: Cunningham-28 Battle Rifle
An oversized assault rifle intended to be fired from the hip, using the same rounds as its older brother the Cunningham-16. Norlight soldiers swear by its stopping power but other leagues generally find it hard to use effectively thanks to its large size, though some units employ it as a support weapon. (Heavy Assault Rifle)
Main Weapon: Kerringer KM-4 Compact Sub-Machinegun
An adaptation of the both beloved and despised KP-4 for military use, the KM-4 retains all of its predecessor’s qualities for better or worse. While all NLAF troops appreciate its small size and legendary reliability in the field, its reputation tends to be worse among soldiers who have had to literally grapple with its notorious top-loading magazine while trying to fire it in combat. (Light Submachine Gun, Compact, Reliable, Purpose-Built, Off Balance)
Sidearm: Kerringer KM-6 Pistol
Yet another copy of the Paxton P9, trading modularity for increased ease of operation and repair. Notable mainly for being officially licensed from Paxton instead of just another unauthorized copy, making Kerringer an unexpected early partner in the OPAL program after the bombing of Peace River. (Medium Pistol, Purpose-Built)
Sidearm: Reas 64FP Toth
A precisely engineered high-capacity pistol using a staggered-round clip. While praised for its accuracy and reliability, the Toth falls into the unfortunate position of costing more than the common P9 while having less stopping power than the Chapman, leading to only limited adoption despite its many advantages. (Light Pistol, Ammo Efficient, Reliable)
Specialist Armor: Noveren Materials Shortstop Anti-Overpressure Infantry Armor
A combat-adapted version of an ordnance disposal suit, designed to allow troops to survive artillery fire. Layers of armoplast-foam sandwich successfully disperse the effects of blastwaves, but also make the Shortstop so hot and uncomfortable that most troops refuse to put them on them unless under active bombardment. (Medium Flak, Full Suit, Explosive Hardened, Bulky)
Support Weapon: Cunningham-51 GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun)
A portable, belt-fed machine gun with a distinctly boxy reciever . The Cunningham-51 has largely—but not totally—replaced the -16 model in NLAF service, though the much larger rounds it fires can cause logistical problems. Troops have nicknamed it “The Sniffer” thanks to its weight and the distinctive smell it makes when the barrel gets hot. (Medium Machine Gun)
Support Weapon: Kerringer KM-99 Shotgun
A fully automatic tight-choke shotgun designed for room-clearing duty. Designed as a support weapon rather than a primary longarm, the KM-99 strips out several features considered unnecessary for the role such as frame modularity and selective fire capability, resulting in a more rugged weapon than others of its type. (Medium Automatic Shotgun, Purpose-Built)
Support Weapon: DiMaean FLARE Infantry Rocket Pack
An adaptation of the gear rocket pod concept for infantry use, the FLARE is a box-shaped multiple tube rocket launcher intended to be salvo-fired from the shoulder. While its firepower is impressive on paper, it is somewhat cumbersome to use and the micromissiles have an unfortunate tendency to detonate before reaching their targets, leading to a performance not significantly superior to more traditional weapons. (Light RPG, Rapid Fire, Bulky, Unreliable)
Support Weapon: Reas 82FR Sterence DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle)
Adapted from an older Riley assault rifle, the Sterence adequately meets the needs of NLAF sharpshooters. Its operators tend to appreciate it and do not respond well when amateurs compare it to the Dartand M-42. (Medium Rifle)
Support Weapon: DiMaean Longbow-30 PSAM (Portable Surface-to-Air Missile)
Despite having the most powerful air force on Terra Nova, the NLAF takes air defense very seriously and until recently was the only Terra Novan military to organically integrate air defense capabilities into infantry units. The Longbow-30 is the latest in a long series of portable SAMs by DiMaean, and incorporates the latest advancements in remote firing technology for improved user safety. (Medium Anti-Air Missile, Remote)
Chaplain’s Melee Weapon: Norlight Industries Tactical Fighting Staff
Sister Dorothea designed her original fighting staff as a purely defensive weapon in accordance with Mamoud’s teachings, making sure that while it would be useful in a fight, the possibility of inflicting lethal wounds with it would be minimum. Norlight weapons designers have spent the past four centuries “improving” this feature out of existence. The latest model authorized for use by NLAF chaplains is made of high-grade carbon steel and includes a modular head system for quickly switching out different weapon heads. (Medium Fighting Staff)
Extra: Northern Interoperability
All CNCS League armed forces use Norguard equipment in addition to locally manufactured weapons.
New Weapon Trait: Remote
The user of this weapon can fire it without being in physical contact, from a distance of up to 5 meters away. The user may not benefit from the Aim action while operating the weapon in this manner. +1 PL.
Author’s Note: DiMaean is a Shaian subsidiary. Also, the NLC’s military keeps changing its official abbreviation—in 1935 it’s the NAF, but in 1954 it’s the NLAF, and it switches back and forth. If you’re playing in a different time period just choose whichever sounds cooler.
