Slyphic's Black Talons

I finally finished my Black Talon force for Heavy Gear Blitz. 13 models being more than enough for the most elite army in the game. A nice contrast to my sprawling Southern horde, featuring all the Claw series of gears.

I wanted to do a classic black, but I also didn’t want them literally black, so I started with a kinda darkish grey and highlighted up and then shaded the whole thing down with a wash. They were looking a little simple through, so I added a high contrast fluorescent looking couple parts in orange. My head canon is that they’re narrow spectrum optical IFF flags. A passive IFF system to keep them invisible unless you’re looking in a very specific range band.

CEF Medium Hovertank Squadron

CEF Medium Hovertank Squadron

Medium Hovertanks (often called Predators) are the backbone of CEF armored units currently operating on Terra Nova. Originally during the first invasion these tanks were classed as heavy hovertanks, but that designation changed when even heavier units were identified. Regardless these tanks are the most easily recognized and highly visible part of the CEF’s armored forces. Survivors of engagements with these units say nothing compares to the sudden havoc that can be wrought by hovertanks. Using their superior mobility, these units can easily bypass heavily defended positions or densely packed formations of conventional armor to strike from unexpected directions. This allows the CEF to exploit nearly any weakness in an opponent’s order of battle swiftly and decisively. Hovertanks are hungry and thirsty beasts however and due to their incredible maintenance demands, not to mention cost, it is rare for medium hovertank patrols to form more than half a larger battle group’s standing force. This formation and doctrinal mission are still present in Port Arthur who has since modified it to include the Hetairoi hovertanks available to NuCoal forces.

Caprice Reinforcements: Sarru and Rabbu

F-27 Sarru

The F-27 Sarru is a combat focused rebuild of the Type 27 “Big Guy”. The original Type 27 was designed for rescue operations and limited combat duties. Those roles are wholly unsuited to the type of situations it would encounter on Terra Nova. Alongside the F-112 Rabbu, F-32 Maru and F-55 Zikru it was reworked for direct combat operations. Various weapon loadouts were developed using preexisting hardpoints and equipment. Its hammer was retained due to its excellent performance in Caprician arena fights, the added intimidation factor is a bonus.

The Spartan II is Bigger and Badder!

Spartan II

Spartan II

The Spartan was designed by Peace River Skunkwerks to be an easy to produce heavy trooper gear that could be used in place of Warrior IVs. Simpler, easy to produce components were sourced from other Peace River designs particularly the Crusader. These larger parts made the Spartan quite a bit larger than other gears of its class. Paxton unveiled their new gear to the public as part of its rebuilding campaign with the tagline “Bigger & Badder”. The larger actuators and joint components had an unexpected side effect once the gear hit the market.

The Gold Mamba Has All the Bling

T-XM1500/2 GOLD MAMBA

The design team has worked simultaneously on a second prototype for the Rock Mamba, following a slightly unusual philosophy. Whereas most companies create a machine, see what does not work with it, then work their way up to a cost-efficient solution, the engineers on this project worked with a second machine on the side on which they would install the most expensive system to solve any problems the first machine would have. Technicians would then tweak it and whittle it down to make the system as inexpensive as possible, removing parts which, in practice, would not really affect the system’s performance in this particular case, and so on. As a result, the budget of the entire project has reached unheard-of levels, making the Gold Mamba the most expensive Gear since the original J├Ąger prototype, hence the name.

Bearhunters Bear Arms

HACS-01MG-FU/A BEARHUNTER

Ever since the arrival of the Armored Hunter, the armorers of the 33rd HG regiment had been trying to tackle the problem of the high pilot casualty rate. Their Armored Hunters were performing poorly, and more than one mission was scrubbed because of “sudden equipment failure.” Most officers just shrugged; relieved at not having to send men out to die in underpowered tin cans, they just grabbed the nearest requisition sheet and tried to get new machines for the umpteenth time. The Armored Hunter was just far too heavy for its S-V950B engine. The powerplant performed well with the recalibrated actuators, but just could not provide enough power for fast, agile move- ments. Without the extra power, the Armored Hunter was a suicidal machine to pilot, so slow that it could be picked off by enemy Gears despite increased armor and could barely mount a counter-attack. As is often the case with military design flaws, the solution to the problem was discovered by coincidence and in the field.

Armored Hunter Assault!

HACS-01MG-FU ARMORED HUNTER

The “Full Armor” Hunter, also known as “the armored can,” is one of the rarest Hunter variants of all. The FU program was an attempt to create a new type of Hunter that would be able to survive anything short of the firepower of a tank. Although the resulting armored shell was fairly impervious to Gear-class weaponry, the machine proved to be about as agile as the average herding springer. Its poor perform- ance was a reflection of the extreme weight of its armor. The torso and lower legs were covered with plating that almost doubled in thickness, compared to the old Hunter plates. Both shoulders and generator housings received armored covers, and the skirts were elongated and thickened. A cast metal “helmet” was fitted on the head. The resulting machine was well protected, but it could barely move about. In recalibrating the actuators to support the higher load, the engineers were forced to slow them down to provide the required torque, severely hampering performances. The weapons were also traded for armored versions, namely the M226 armored autocannon and the RP-109A Iron Pepperbox.

Caprice Reinforcements: Maru and Zikru

F-32 Maru

Small and wide-footed, the F-32 can easily make its way across both the urban jungle of Gomorrah or the broken ground of Caprice’s landscape. While initially employed as a civil policing unit, the F-32 has been updated with heavier armaments for combat operations.

F-55 Zikru

Like the F-27 and the F-32, the pads on the F-55’s hands and feet utilize “Lacerta-tech,” produced by Lysander Incorporated, which can be engaged to produce Van der Waals force. This Lacerta-tech, combined with additional climbing equipment, makes these frames excellent climbers.

Southern City Militia Cadre

The core units of the City Militia Defense Forces are the Gear cadres which field either older Gears or newer cheaper Asps. These units perform the role of a stop-gap measure until assistance from a regular military unit arrives. Most of the pilots in these Gears are retired veterans or members of the Youth Guard training to be ready for duty in the SRA or MILICIA.

Automaton Infantry Terminate Enemy Resistance

Automaton Infantry

Utopian warfare is dominated by automatons, or autos for short. Auto is a catch all term for any drone used by Utopians be it for combat, transportation, picking up garbage or even housekeeping. The most famous examples known on Terra Nova are the N-KIDU units. However, these are far from the only models used. Recent sightings of smaller, humanoid units have begun to trickle in. Classified as Trooper Automatons, the Utopian armies use these to clear dense urban terrain as well as hold and fortify positions against attacks. The Clearance teams in particular have a reputation for completely annihilating any opposing forces, human or auto, civilian or military, unless they receive an order to stand down.
